Counseling and Psychotherapy

Counseling, or psychotherapy, is a collaborative process where clients participate in regularly scheduled sessions, during which they engage in identifying challenges and needs, increasing insight and self-awareness, and developing strategies to reach the goals they desire.

Counseling does not have to be a long-term venture. We often employ short-term psychotherapy approaches that have been shown to be very effective with many emotional and relationship difficulties. Our experienced and well-trained clinicians provide high quality care using treatments that are backed by the latest research. We specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

At Paoli Psychological Associates, we tailor the counseling approach to best address clients’ needs and goals. In addition to short-term approaches, we sometimes use longer-term, insight oriented approaches. Through these approaches, clients achieve success in making important changes, accelerating personal growth, attaining greater contentment, and enhancing personal effectiveness.

Additionally, we often collaborate with other professionals with whom our clients are working, such as psychiatrists, doctors, teachers, or guidance counselors. Such collaborations frequently aid the client's success.

We provide counseling and assessment services for children, adolescents, adults, couples, families, students, and individuals in career transition.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

PPA is pleased to offer CBT to help individuals overcome emotional and relationship problems. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that has been scientifically researched and found to be effective. In hundreds of research studies, CBT was validated as effective for many different disorders including various anxiety disorders and depression. CBT is also an effective approach to relationship and interpersonal problems. It is one of the few therapies to have such substantial scientific research behind it.

In contrast to many other types of therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is short-term, focused on the present, and problem-solving oriented. Clients learn specific skills that last a lifetime. CBT, as indicated in the name, involves cognitive and behavioral techniques that help clients change unhelpful distorted thinking and behaviors.

Some of our counselors and therapists at PPA have advanced training in CBT. Click here for more information about CBT.

Trauma / PTSD / EMDR

Traumas are powerful experiences that may have long-lasting effects for many individuals. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects many people and causes emotional distress and disrupts relationships. PPA provides effective treatments for PTSD and similar problems, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Our counselors and therapists have advanced training in CBT and EMDR.

EMDR and CBT are evidenced-based treatments for PTSD. CBT helps clients reduce anxiety and fear by employing a number of effective strategies to overcome these troubling emotions. Distressing memories are one of the hallmarks of PTSD. The goal of EMDR therapy is to process these distressing memories, reducing their effects, and allowing clients to develop better coping mechanisms.

Biofeedback, Headache & Stress Management

PPA is pleased to offer Biofeedback as a treatment for a variety of issues including migraine headache management and prevention and stress management.

Headaches, especially migraine headaches, can be debilitating and interfere with one’s life and ability to function. WMDA offers non-medication approaches to treating headaches including Biofeedback and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).  Our therapists help educate clients about headaches, effective treatments for headaches, and provide up-to-date research-based techniques to manage and prevent headaches.

Because stress is the most common headache trigger, learning to manage one’s stress response is a key intervention for preventing headaches.  Therapists at PPA employ Biofeedback and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques to aid clients in changing their response to stress, including changing stress-inducing thought patterns and relaxation techniques.

Autism Spectrum Disorders and Asperger’s Syndrome

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition which usually becomes evident in childhood and affects individuals in their communication, social interaction, and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. Asperger’s Syndrome was a term formerly used for individuals with what is thought to be the mildest form of autism. The term Autism Spectrum Disorder reflects that ASD is very diverse, and can look much different in different individuals.
Autism spectrum disorders affect three main areas of a child's life:

  • Social interaction
  • Communication — verbal and nonverbal
  • Restricted behaviors and interests

Each child with an ASD may have a different pattern of autism.
PPA offers a range of services for individuals with ASD or Asperger’s Syndrome including:

  • Psychological evaluations for ASD and possible co-existing issues.
  • Individual counseling and therapy
  • Family counseling
  • Social skills development services
  • Parent training
  • Education
