Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a short-term, structured, goal-oriented type of psychotherapy. Mental health professionals use it to treat or manage mental health conditions and emotional difficulties. It is a modern, widely used, well-researched form of therapy.

CBT is based on the concept that people feel and behave according to how they think. Psychological issues and symptoms are caused by problematic, unhelpful patterns of thinking and faulty learned behaviors.

People suffering from psychological/ emotional/ behavioral problems can learn better ways of coping, relieving their symptoms, and become more effective and content in their lives. CBT offers many useful tools and techniques for this process.

The Research
CBT has been demonstrated in research to be effective for a range of problems including depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug use problems, marital and relationship problems, eating disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and various other mental health issues. Numerous research studies suggest CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. In many studies, CBT has been demonstrated to be as or more effective than other forms of psychotherapy or psychiatric medications.

In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the therapist and patient/client work together in a collaborative fashion to develop an understanding of the problem and to develop a treatment strategy. CBT places an emphasis on helping individuals to be their own therapists. Through exercises in the sessions as well as “homework” exercises outside of the sessions, patients/clients are helped to develop coping skills, so that they can make changes in their own thinking, emotions, and behavior.

What Sets PPA Apart
While many therapists today have had at least some education and experience in CBT, the level of training in CBT varies. Many therapists incorporate CBT into an eclectic or integrative approach rather than practice CBT in a systematic way as it is done in research. At PPA, our professionals are well trained in CBT and specialize in it.
